Songwriting & Composition Lessons

Turn your musical ideas into songs with songwriting and composition lessons!

 

Songwriting is a meaningful outlet that allows students to express themselves in a uniquely personal way. For students who have so much to say but have not yet found the right words or notes, songwriting can be a powerful form of self-expression. Our teachers provide individualized guidance to help students deepen their creative voices and understanding of music.

Who Are Songwriting & Composition Lessons For?

We offer songwriting and composition lessons for children, teens, and adults of all experience levels.
 

Students do not need previous songwriting experience to begin. While many students choose to pair songwriting with piano, guitar, voice, or another instrument, it is not required. Curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to explore are the only prerequisites.

  • beginning songwriters

  • aspiring composers

  • instrumentalists

  • singer-songwriters

  • students interested in film, video game, or media music

What Students Learn

 

Lessons are personalized to each student's age, experience level, learning style, and musical interests.

 

Students may explore:

  • lyric and melody writing

  • harmony and chord progressions

  • song structure

  • music notation and tablature​​

  • arranging

  • improvisation

  • developing an artistic voice

  • music theory

Students are encouraged to experiment, collaborate, revise, and discover their own unique style throughout the creative process.

Our teachers have experience teaching a wide variety of musical styles, including:

Lessons are designed to follow each student's interests while building strong musical foundations, creative and technical skills for composition, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Getting Started

 

Your teacher can help determine what you may need to get started with lessons after discussing your goals.

 

Examples of some preferred materials may include:

  • pencil and journal

  • manuscript paper

  • preferred instrument such as guitar, piano, ukulele (optional)

  • small device for recording (could be a phone, voice recorder)

  • composition software (not required)
